We are a flexible company, able to provide electrical support for a variety of work. We can work as either fixed price or day rate and, for large projects, work with other companies to provide more extensive PLC design, software or manufacturing capability.
Design
We can take your requirements and produce schematic drawings, cable schedules, PLC IO lists and functional specifications. Working with different disciplines, we can turn initial discussions of equipment function and hydraulic / software interfaces into more formal documentation. Our strength is that we can work to your general requirements to produce, not just drawings, but the electrical design behind them, together with higher level documentation where necessary. With experience of numerous projects, we can also suggest more cost-effective solutions and advise what works, and what does not.
Purchasing and subassemblies
From large capital items, for example motors and transformers, to assemblies such as control panels, we can refine your requirements into a detailed specification and obtain quotes. For smaller items, we can supply or fabricate equipment ourselves. We have recently purchased a 3D printer, which allows us to fabricate, and if necessary design, small plastic parts.
Assembly stage support
As equipment and cabling is assembled on site it is important that this is supervised and co-ordinated by someone with practical electrical knowledge. Not only does this allow production to be planned efficiently and progress monitored, it provides a smoother interface between different trades and allows commissioning to start earlier. By carefully beginning initial testing and quality checks on the part complete assembly, it is possible to speed up the project. I have worked in this role many times.
Commissioning and testing
For fast and cost-effective projects it is vital to test components as early as possible. Subassemblies should be tested before integration into the main equipment and panels should be checked before leaving the factory. It is especially important to reduce potential testing and retrofit at remote sites. We can carry out commissioning of equipment, from a single Factory Acceptance Test to full commissioning of the electrical system. Our speciality is testing prototype equipment, checking not just the assembled hardware, but whether the design behind it meets the intended functional requirements.
Cost reduction
From work as a maintenance engineer at Corus/British steel, to designing multiple iterations of the Pelamis wave energy device, I have a keen interest in cost reduction. Having worked on over a dozen different renewable prototypes at different companies, I repeatedly see the same issues. Using this experience I can advise which give dramatic cost reductions, and which tempting ideas are actually false economies.
Documentation
We can produce a range of documentation, including schematics, cables schedules, procedures, specifications and interface documents. My side business of writing non-fiction books, including my 450 page beginners guide to AutoCAD Electrical, demonstrate my interest in this area and experience in explaining topics clearly and concisely. I have software to produce custom maps to your requirements and can also print manuals as bound booklets.
Work at remote sites
Renewable projects are frequently installed at remote sites. With many years’ experience of assembly and commissioning at these places, I am aware of the unique challenges they present.
Safety
While at Corus/British Steel, I was in charge of cranes, a carbon monoxide gas recovery system and was an Authorised Person for switching and applying earths on electrical equipment up to 11kV. Moving to the renewable energy industry, I experienced the hazards of working at remote sites, around water and of developing prototype equipment and new site installations. With experience of such dangerous environments, I fully appreciate that safety is top priority.
