The electrical systems for this large, offshore wave energy device were tested in Rosyth before being assembled into its structure at the steelwork fabricator’s workshop in Cowdenbeath, Scotland. Working as a subcontractor to Sequentec, I supported the development of this device over several years.
I designed several electrical panels as well as the cabling between them. I fabricated several panels myself and purchased much of the cabling, which I then supplied to Mocean. The cabling system included numerous subsystems. For example, I designed and purchased submersible junction boxes for the bilge system and fabricated resilient, IP67 LED strip lights.
During assembly, I supervised the contract electricians and worked closely with Mocean’s mechanical contractor, Blackfish, to produce a safe and efficient assembly method. I then created a commissioning plan for the electrical system and carried out this testing in Cowdenbeath. Following the successful deployment of Mocean’s device, I have also supported them with occasional electrical modifications and upgrades.
